Meet Praetorian's leadership team

Nathan Sportsman

As the Founder and CEO of Praetorian, Nathan is responsible for championing the vision, maintaining the culture, and setting the direction of the company. He also holds the additional duties of CTO, where he is responsible for overseeing the innovation and development engine of the company, keeping the firm well positioned to defeat the ever evolving cybersecurity threat.

Prior to bringing in professional management to help run the company, Nathan managed the day-to-day operations of the firm from its 2010 beginnings as a bootstrapped start-up to its current YoY hyper-growth. Since Praetorian’s founding, Nathan has successfully instilled a “customer first” mentality that has become part of the DNA of the company, which has led to unprecedented customer satisfaction reviews as reflected in a historical net promoter score of 86%. This reputation for delivering value to the customer has resulted in a three-year growth rate of 214%. Under Nathan’s leadership, the company has earned national recognition on the Inc. 5000 list multiple times, the Cybersecurity 500, CIO Top 20, and locally on Austin’s “Fastest 50” growing firms.

Prior to founding Praetorian, Nathan worked in various technical roles at industry-leading companies such as Sun Microsystems, Symantec, and McAfee. His experience has cross cut most industry sectors, and customers have ranged from Wall Street and Silicon Valley to government intelligence agencies and renowned educational institutions. Nationally recognized as a leader in the cybersecurity field, Nathan is a frequent public speaker, is a contributing author to the world's best-selling computer security book, Hacking Exposed, is a U.S. patent holder, and has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Austin (nationally ranked #5 for Computer Science and Engineering).

Nathan holds a BS in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Bill Wood

Bill Wood financially invested in Praetorian and joined its board of directors in early 2020.

Based in Austin, Texas, Bill Wood is one of the most experienced venture capitalist in Texas. His track record spans over three decades and parallels the emergence of Austin as one of the world's strongest technology driven economies. He has provided start-up financing, board level guidance and mentoring to dozens of start-ups, several of which have sustained multi-billion dollar market capitalizations.

Bill is a past recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur-of-the-Year award. He was also the winner of the Austin Technology Summit's "Pillar of the Community" award, recognizing his lifetime contribution to the community. Finally, he was the inaugural inductee into the Austin Technology Hall of Fame.

Bill founded or co-founded two of the most active venture firms in Texas. In 1984, he was one of the original founding partners of Austin Ventures which went on to become the largest firm in the region with over $3 billion of capital under management. In 2006, he founded Silverton Partners which is now the most active venture firm in the state. In 2018, Bill retired from Silverton Partners but continues to invest in early stage companies through his family office.

Bill graduated from Brown University, Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. He received his MBA from Harvard University. Bill has served on the Board of Trustees of Brown University and is a Trustee Emeritus of the University.

Kevin Buehler

Kevin Buehler joined as a board observer following McKinsey & Company's 2020 investment in Praetorian.

Kevin is a senior partner in McKinsey & Company's New York office. He cofounded McKinsey's global Risk Practice and is the global leader of its risk advanced-analytics and cybersecurity efforts. He is the CEO of Risk Dynamics, a McKinsey company acquired in 2016, focused on model risk management and risk advanced analytics. In addition, he cochairs McKinsey's launch committee, providing early stage funding for technology-enabled innovations across the firm.

Previously, he led McKinsey's work in corporate and investment banking in the Americas and co-led it globally. For more than two decades, Kevin has helped senior executives at leading financial institutions solve their most challenging strategic, risk, regulatory, and analytical problems. Prior to McKinsey, he served as COO of an emerging markets private equity firm, practiced corporate law as an attorney at one of the premier US law firms, and was cofounder and CFO of a targeted recruiting services firm.

Kevin is a respected thought leader in the industry and his perspectives have been cited in leading publications such as American Banker, Wall Street Journal, and Harvard Business Review.

Kevin holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He received his A.B. from Harvard University, Summa Cum Laude, with a focus on Economics.

Cam McMartin

Cam McMartin joined Praetorian's board of directors in early 2020, bringing proven experience in scaling businesses.

Prior to joining the Praetorian board of directors, Mr. McMartin served as SailPoint's Chief Operating Officer from May 2019 to December 2019 and as its Chief Financial Officer from 2011 to May 2019. At SailPoint he drove growth from a financial as well as from an operational standpoint. During his tenure, SailPoint completed a $1 billion IPO in 2017 and reached its current valuation of more than $2.2 billion.

At the end of 2019, McMartin left SailPoint’s executive leadership team and joined its board of directors. Mr. McMartin also serves as a member of its cybersecurity committee since January 2020.

Before SailPoint, McMartin served as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer for CenterPoint Ventures, a $425 million venture capital group. Prior to CenterPoint Ventures, McMartin held senior financial management positions with several corporations, including Chief Financial Officer at Convex Computer (NYSE: CNX) and Senior VP, Operations at Dazel.

Mr. McMartin holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Trinity University and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.
